Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Return

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.

He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
